The Daily Essentials, Year-Round
- A full change of clothes (weather-appropriate), labelled with your child’s name
- Diapers and wipes, if applicable, with enough for a full day
- A labelled water bottle or sippy cup
- A comfort item for nap time, if your child has one
- Indoor shoes or non-slip socks, kept at the centre
Winter (November through March)
Calgary winters demand real preparation. Pack a properly insulated snowsuit, waterproof mittens (not just gloves — mittens retain more warmth for little hands), a warm hat that covers the ears, and insulated winter boots. It’s worth keeping a spare set of mittens and a hat at the centre, since one set inevitably ends up wet or misplaced.
Spring (April and May)
Calgary spring weather swings widely — sometimes snow, sometimes 15°C sunshine, often in the same week. Layering is key: a light jacket, a rain shell for wet days, and rubber boots for puddle-heavy outdoor play. Keep a lighter change of clothes on hand as the weather warms.
Summer (June through August)
Pack sunscreen (check your centre’s policy — many require parent-applied sunscreen or a signed consent form), a wide-brimmed sun hat, and lightweight, breathable clothing. A refillable water bottle becomes even more important during outdoor play on hot days.
Fall (September and October)
A light-to-medium jacket, a warmer layer for cooler mornings, and rubber boots for wet leaves and puddles will cover most fall days. Fall is also a good time to check that your child’s spare seasonal clothing at the centre is still correctly sized.
A Few Practical Tips
- Label everything — clothing, bottles, and comfort items all move around a busy classroom
- Check in with your child’s educator monthly about sizing, since young children grow quickly
- Keep a rotating spare outfit at the centre rather than relying on same-day drop-offs
