Everything You Need
to Know, In One Place

From the Affordability Grant and enrollment to what to pack on day one, this guide covers the practical side of joining Bright Kids so you can focus on the exciting part.

Financial Support

Childcare You Can Actually Afford

Alberta's Affordability Grant is one of the most accessible childcare funding programs in Canada. At Bright Kids, it's applied automatically, you shouldn't have to fight to access what your family is entitled to.

Automatic, No Application

Alberta Affordability Grant

$15/day
Maximum daily fee after grant

The Alberta Affordability Grant reduces childcare fees for all Alberta families, regardless of income. At Bright Kids, this is applied automatically at enrollment, there's nothing to fill out, no approval process, and no follow-up required. Every family gets it.

How It Works

Three Simple Steps

1

Book a Tour

Visit any Bright Kids location. We'll walk you through our rooms, answer your questions, and give you a clear picture of fees after the grant is applied.

2

Enroll & Join the Waitlist

Complete enrollment paperwork. There's nothing extra to apply for, the Affordability Grant is built into the process from day one.

3

Grant Applied Automatically

From your child's first day, the Alberta Affordability Grant is already built into your fee. No paperwork, no follow-up, no waiting on approval.

Getting Started

Enrollment & Waitlist

Calgary childcare waitlists move, spots open more often than most families expect. Here's exactly how our process works so you know what to expect at every step.

How Enrollment Works

1

Book a Tour

Schedule a tour at any of our Calgary locations. You'll meet the team, see the rooms, and get a feel for the environment. Tours are free and take about 30–45 minutes.

2

Submit Your Application

After your tour, you'll complete an enrollment application with your child's information, your preferred start date, and program preference.

3

We'll Contact You When a Spot Opens

When a space becomes available that matches your child's age and program, we'll reach out by phone and email. You'll have time to confirm before the spot is offered to the next family.

4

Transition & First Day

Before your child's first day, we'll schedule a gradual transition, short visits to meet their educator and explore the room so the real first day feels familiar, not scary.

Can I join multiple locations?

Yes, you can apply to all three Bright Kids locations simultaneously. Each location maintains its own waitlist. We'll always confirm with you before allocating a spot, so you can choose the location that works best at the time.

Can I add an unborn child?

Absolutely. We encourage families to get on the waitlist as early as possible, even before birth. Calgary infant care spots fill quickly. You'll need a name and expected due date to register.

Do you offer part-time spots?

Our programs run full-time (Monday–Friday, 6:30 AM–6:00 PM). We don't currently offer scheduled part-time arrangements, but families can pick up and drop off at any point within those hours based on their own schedule.

Starting Out

Your Child's First Days

Starting daycare is a big transition for children and parents alike. Here's what to bring, and what to expect during the settling-in process.

What to Bring Each Day

Change of Clothes (×2)

Labelled with your child's name. Accidents, spills, and paint happen, we'll send anything soiled home in a bag.

Labelled Sippy Cup or Water Bottle (Infants)

We provide fresh-made meals and snacks daily, but if your child has a specific milk or formula routine, just send it along in labelled containers and we'll follow it exactly.

Comfort Item (if needed)

A small stuffy, blanket, or soother. Especially helpful during the first few weeks for infants and toddlers.

Outdoor Clothing (Season-Appropriate)

Toddlers and preschoolers go outside daily. In winter: snowpants, boots, mittens, and a hat, all labelled.

Sunscreen & Hat (Summer)

Labelled sunscreen we can apply before outdoor time. We won't apply products without prior written consent on file.

Any Medications (if prescribed)

In original packaging, labelled, with written instructions. We'll store and administer according to your documented consent.

All meals, breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack, are prepared fresh in our kitchen daily. No lunch box needed.

The Settling-In Process

We Go at Your Child's Pace

There's no fixed timeline for how long settling-in takes. Some children walk in confident on day one. Others take a few weeks. Both are completely normal. We won't rush it, and we'll give you honest updates every day so you always know how your child is actually doing, not just a reassuring "they were fine."

Transition Visits Before Day One

Before your child's official start date, we schedule short transition visits, 30 to 60 minutes, where you can stay with your child in the room, meet their primary educator, and let them explore at their own pace. These visits make a measurable difference in how smoothly the real first day goes.

Goodbye Rituals Matter

We'll work with you to establish a consistent goodbye routine, a hug, a phrase, a wave. Children settle faster when goodbyes are predictable and brief. Lingering tends to make it harder, not easier. Your educator will guide you through what works best for your child's age and temperament.

You Can Always Call

If you're anxious during the day, call us. We'd rather take two minutes to tell you your child is happily building with blocks than have you worry all morning. An open-door policy for parents is something we take seriously, you're welcome to visit any time.

Day to Day

What Life at Bright Kids Looks Like

The practical details that make a real difference to families every day.

Hours

All Bright Kids locations are open Monday to Friday, 6:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Drop-off and pick-up can happen at any point within those hours. We're closed on Alberta statutory holidays.

Meals & Nutrition

We serve three fresh-prepared meals daily: breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snack. All meals are included in your fee, no lunchbox needed. We accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions with written notice.

Daily Communication

Every family receives a written daily report covering meals, naps, activities, and notable moments. Educators are available at pickup for a brief conversation, and you can always call during the day if you need an update.

Sick Day Policy

Children who are contagious, have a fever above 38°C, or have vomited in the past 24 hours must stay home. We'll contact you to arrange pick-up if a child becomes unwell during the day. We know this can be challenging, our team will always be as clear as possible about when it's safe to return.

Security & Safety

All Bright Kids facilities use secured entry systems. Only authorized individuals on your pick-up list can collect your child. Photo ID may be requested from anyone we don't recognize. Our staff are First Aid and CPR certified.

Immunization

We follow Alberta Health Services guidelines on immunization. While we welcome all children, we ask that families keep immunization records current and share them with us at enrollment. Please let us know of any medical conditions that may require accommodation.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything new families typically want to know, organized so you can find what you need quickly.

General & Enrollment
Bright Kids accepts children from 12 months through 5 years of age, across three programs: Infant Care (12–19 months), Toddler Program (19 months–3 years), and Preschool (3–5 years). Children graduate to kindergarten after completing our Preschool program.
Yes, and we encourage it. Tours are free and available at all three Bright Kids locations. You'll walk through the rooms, meet educators, and get a real feel for how the environment works. There's no commitment or sales pressure. We'd rather you take your time and feel confident than rush into a decision.
Waitlist times vary significantly by program, location, and time of year. Infant Care spots are the most in demand and can have longer waits, which is why we strongly encourage families to register while pregnant or as early as possible. Toddler and Preschool spots tend to open more frequently. When you book a tour, we'll give you an honest estimate based on current waitlist status.
Yes. If your family moves or your needs change, we'll do our best to arrange a transfer to another Bright Kids location. This depends on availability at the destination location, we'll be transparent about timelines and never transfer your child without a smooth transition plan in place first.
We are committed to inclusive care and welcome children with a range of needs into our programs. We'd encourage you to reach out directly before enrollment so we can have an honest conversation about how we can best support your child. In some cases, we can connect families with Alberta's Inclusive Child Care (ICC) program, which provides additional funding and support resources for children with diverse needs.
Daily Routines & Programs
Yes, we follow Alberta's guidelines for cold weather play. Children go outside when conditions are appropriate, and we ask families to ensure proper winter gear is labelled and packed each day: snowpants, insulated boots, mittens, and a hat. On days that are too cold or severe, we bring active movement indoors.
We use a positive guidance approach. When children are struggling with behaviour, our educators respond with calm co-regulation, clear language, and redirection. We believe children who are struggling behaviourally are communicating an unmet need, and our job is to help them find language and strategies for what they're feeling. Big behaviour is never punished, it's met with curiosity and support.
No. Children in the Infant Care and Toddler programs are not expected to be toilet-trained. We actively support the toilet training process in the Toddler room in partnership with families, following your lead, staying consistent with your approach, and never pressuring or shaming children around it. We ask families to bring extra clothing and pull-ups during the training phase.
Our Preschool uses an emergent curriculum model, meaning learning is driven by children's own interests and questions rather than a fixed lesson plan. This is evidence-based: children learn more deeply when they're genuinely curious. We build literacy, numeracy, science, and social-emotional skills throughout the day through play, projects, and guided exploration.
Meals & Nutrition
Yes, with written notice at enrollment. Please provide full details of any diagnosed allergies, intolerances, or dietary restrictions. Our kitchen prepares all meals on-site, which gives us significant flexibility. For severe or anaphylactic allergies, we'll develop an individual allergy action plan in coordination with your family and healthcare provider. We ask that any prescribed EpiPens or medications be provided and kept on file at the centre.
Generally, no, all meals are prepared in our licensed kitchen and included in your fee. Home food can create allergen cross-contamination risks in a shared environment. Exceptions can be made for specific cultural, religious, or medical dietary requirements that we are unable to accommodate in our kitchen. Please speak with us directly if this applies to your family.
Selective eating is extremely common, especially in toddlers, and we are experienced in supporting children through it. We use a division of responsibility approach: we decide what is offered; children decide whether and how much they eat. We never force, pressure, or coax. We do offer the same meal to all children (with allergen substitutes where needed) and believe that repeated, low-pressure exposure to a variety of foods is the most effective long-term strategy. We'll always tell you what your child ate at pickup.
Health & Safety
All Bright Kids staff are First Aid and CPR certified. Minor bumps and scrapes are treated on-site and documented in an incident report, which you'll receive at pickup. For anything more significant, we'll contact you immediately. In a medical emergency, we call 911 first and then notify you right away. Incident reports are logged and kept on file.
Children should stay home if they have a fever of 38°C or higher, have vomited or had diarrhea in the past 24 hours, have a contagious illness (pink eye, strep throat, chickenpox, etc.), or are simply too unwell to participate comfortably in a group setting. We'll always contact you to pick up a child who becomes unwell during the day. We'll provide guidance on when it's safe to return.
Only individuals listed on your authorized pick-up list may collect your child. We'll ask anyone we don't recognize to show photo ID. If someone new will be picking up your child on a given day, please let us know in advance by phone or in writing. We take this seriously, when in doubt, your child stays with us until we reach you directly.
